USA: Hurricane Irene Update
26th August 2011 Hurricane Irene has the potential to affect a large area of the east coast from South Carolina to New Hampshire from Friday 25 August.The states of New York, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and North Carolina have made pre-landfall emergency declarations as a precaution.
The hurricane season normally runs from June to November and can affect the whole of the southern and eastern USA. Travellers can monitor the progress of storms on the US National Hurricane Centre website.
Evacuations have also been ordered for parts of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and North Carolina.
Follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local TV and radio for updates. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers further resources for those in the affected areas.
