UK Strike Action Threatens Air Travel
21st March 2006 Tuesday 28 March will see nearly 1.5 million council workers strike over pensions. This will be the biggest industrial action protest in Britain since the General Strike of 1926.The strike will not just hit local government services. Unison alone has balloted workers at 6,280 employers and could affect airports and other transport links. The unions involved represent workers at Leeds Bradford and Newcastle airports amongst others.
Members of Unison, Amicus, the T&G, GMB, NAPO and UCATT are all being balloted to strike. Strike action will be coordinated between all the unions to cause maximum impact and disruption.
Union leaders have accused the Government of planning to force council employees to "work until they drop".
