Portugal: General strike date announced

20th October 2011 Portugal's trade union confederations on Wednesday set a general strike for Nov. 24, exactly a year since the last one and as the country embarks on the toughest austerity period in decades.

Transport workers are planning to go on a separate strike next month, while military workers are threatening protests over budget cuts. Portugal's unions called for the strike after the government unveiled a harsh package of measures to control the country's budget deficit in 2012 and 2013.
