Greek air traffic controllers on strike

10th December 2008 Flights to and from Greece will be grounded today (Wednesday) as air traffic controllers walk out for one day to join a general strike over work place reforms and the government's economic policies, union officials said.

"All flights from and to Greek airports will be halted and only emergency flights will take place," Panagiotis Hatzakis, secretary-general of the air traffic controllers' union, said on Monday.

British Airways has cancelled seven flights between Heathrow and Athens and Gatwick and Thessaloniki. Passengers on these flights can rebook on the same route for no additional cost or have their money refunded.

Easyjet has cancelled eight services to Athens and Thessaloniki and is offering alternative dates or a refund. Aegean Airlines, which runs a London Stansted to Athens service, has also cancelled all flights. State-owned Olympic Airlines said they would cancel all foreign and domestic flights on Wednesday.
