Finland general strike could affect travel

10th September 2009 According to a report in the Helsinki Times, the Finnish Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) has said it will stage a six-hour walkout at four government-owned enterprises tomorrow (11th September) in protest against the government's plan to reduce its stakes in some of them.

The union warned the industrial action might cause disruptions at airports and in ferry services and added that about 2,000 workers would take part.

The walkout is to start at midday on 11 September at Finavia, formerly known as the Civil Aviation Administration; Destia (Road Enterprise), Labtium and Raskone.

Finavia claim that, "It will be able to use the personnel and supervisors present and keep 16 airports open during the stoppage by the Trade Union for the Public and Welfare Sectors (JHL) from 12 noon to 6 pm on Friday, 11 September. It will be possible to fully take care of air traffic at Helsinki-Vantaa airport.

"Regarding Kajaani, Kuusamo, Kruunupyy, Pori and Enontekiö, air passengers should directly contact the airline if something is unclear."
