FCO Jakarta bomb update

17th July 2009 The following statement is taken from the FCO Website.

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with an amendment to the Summary (Explosions in Jakarta). The overall level of the advice has not changed.

Shortly before 08:00 local time (02:00 BST) on 17 July 2009 at least two explosions took place at the Ritz Carlton Hotel and JW Marriott Hotels in the Mega Kuningan district of Jakarta.

The Indonesian National Police have confirmed that at least 9 people have been killed and approximately 50 injured. British Embassy staff have visited the scene and local hospitals to which casualties are being evacuated. Access to the area around the explosions is difficult while rescue operations and early investigations remain in progress.

You are advised to stay away from the Mega Kuningan district pending further announcements by the Indonesian National Police; and to avoid unnecessary journeys within central Jakarta for the time being. If you are concerned about a British national who you believe may have been in the area at the time of the explosions, please call the British Embassy helpline on: +62 21 23 565 302.
