Typhoon heading towards Japan

6th October 2009 Super typhoon Melor is forecast to strike Japan as a typhoon at about 18:00 GMT on 7 October. Data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center suggest that the point of landfall will be near 33.1 N, 135.5 E. Melor is expected to bring 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 175 km/h (109 mph). Wind gusts in the area may be considerably higher.

The FCO have issued the following statement:

Typhoon Melor is heading towards Japan. It is forecast to pass close to the islands south of Japan on 7 October and be in closest contact with Tokyo on 8 October. Although it will have weakened by this time it is still expected to be of typhoon strength. The Japanese Meteorological Agency has issued a weather advisory warning of thunderstorms, high waves and gale strength winds. People travelling to Japan on these dates should prepare themselves for possible delays.
